Greyfriars Bobby & the Midnight Procession

Greyfriars Kirkyard, Edinburgh, Scotland

Long after the loyal terrier Bobby died, locals report a small dog leading a silent procession of figures through the kirkyard on the anniversary of his death.

Everyone knows the story of Greyfriars Bobby — the Skye terrier who guarded his master John Gray's grave for 14 years until his own death in 1872. What is less told is what has been seen at the kirkyard since. On the night of January 14th each year — the anniversary of Bobby's death — residents of nearby Candlemaker Row have reported seeing a small dog moving along the cobblestones in the dark. It walks with purpose. Behind it, at a distance, follow indistinct shapes — figures in period dress that those who have seen them struggle to describe clearly. The procession moves from the gate of Greyfriars, along the inner path, to the grave of John Gray, and then simply... is not there anymore. A retired police officer who witnessed it in 1987 described the figures as 'not threatening, just going home.' A student who photographed the scene in 2016 found only the street in their developed images — not the dog, not the shapes. The kirkyard is one of the most paranormally active sites in Europe. Visitors to the Black Mausoleum section have reported unexplained bruising and nausea with remarkable frequency — a phenomenon so consistent it has been academically studied.
