The Ghost Roads of Þórsmörk — Where the Dead Still Walk
Þórsmörk Valley, South Iceland
In the glacial valley sacred to Thor, travellers on the ancient mountain paths have for centuries encountered figures walking ahead of them that leave no footprints and vanish at the river crossings.
Þórsmörk — the Forest of Thor — sits in a valley carved between three glaciers: Eyjafjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull, and Tindfjallajökull. It was a sacred site in the Norse settlement period, a place where sacrifices were made and where the boundary between the living world and something else was considered notably thin. The ancient paths through Þórsmörk were some of Iceland's most important routes, connecting the south coast farms to the interior. They were also some of the most dangerous, requiring multiple crossings of the glacial rivers that could rise without warning. The ghost roads legend is specific and consistent across centuries of accounts: travellers on the old paths — particularly the route approaching from the east near Goðaland — encounter a figure walking ahead of them. The figure keeps a steady pace regardless of the traveller's speed. It does not respond to calls. When it reaches a river crossing, it does not cross — it simply ceases to be there. Icelandic folklore is precise about such figures. They are not the dangerous dead — they are the returning dead, those who died on the road and continue to walk it from habit. They are not considered threatening. They are considered to be doing what they knew how to do. In 2010, when Eyjafjallajökull erupted and evacuations used the Þórsmörk paths, three separate groups reported the same figure on the eastern approach. None of them were in contact with each other at the time.
